Meet the Tech – Laura Plascencia

Laura Plascencia Pic

Laura Plascencia began working at Banner Health in 2008 at Banner University Medical Center – Phoenix (formerly Banner Good Samaritan). Despite her limited experience in the biomedical field, she was fortunate to be able to work at a large hospital with a highly knowledgeable group of Biomed techs and project engineers who were open to sharing their knowledge on most equipment issues that arose. This gave her the opportunity to gain experience on a wide variety of medical equipment very quickly. Another benefit she had when she began her career was the opportunity to work with leaders who empowered her to learn and take ownership of the department; this helped propel her to advance despite the lack of female leaders in the biomedical field.

Laura was born in Guadalajara, Mexico to a humble family of seven siblings and came to the U.S. at the age of five. Because they didn’t have much in material possessions, she spent a lot of time with her brother fixing bikes, skateboards, radios and other things they found discarded in the alleyways of south Phoenix. She claims she never imagined she would end up in the biomedical field, but in retrospect it makes sense. Most biomedical technicians have a fascination with learning how things work by taking them apart and fixing them.

Laura initially enrolled in the business program at DeVry University, only to realize it was not her area of interest. Thankfully, she easily transferred to the Biomed program and has enjoyed every bit of it. In 2007, she graduated with her Bachelors of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology. She also has completed several other equipment-specific training courses throughout her career.

After working four years at BUMC-Phoenix, she took a position in Wyoming operating the Biomed department for two small Banner Health facilities. That was another unique experience that opened doors to many more possibilities. Unfortunately, the Wyoming location wasn’t convenient for traveling back to Arizona to see her family frequently. It was a difficult choice to leave Banner Health, but in May 2014 she took another position in Payson, AZ. Still away from the hustle of the big city, yet only a couple of hours from her family in Phoenix. In June 2015, Payson Regional Medical center received notice that Banner was acquiring the facility. Now she gets to travel some as part of the ENTECH Biomedical Team, serving Banner Payson Medical Center, several other customers in Payson, AZ and its surrounding areas.

Laura enjoys exploring the outdoors with her children and spending time with family. She is currently taking time to slow down and enjoy her children and life as much as possible.
